HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/03/2017 - Minutes i � ' RENTON MUNICIPAL ARTS COMMISSION ' � MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, October 3, 2017 Members Present: Mary Clymer, Mitch Shepherd, Adrienne La Faye, Neil Sheesley, Ben Andrews, Marsha Rollinger, Kim Patterson, Su Gow, Bill Huls, and Evelyn Reingold Excused Absence: Jerri Everett, Samantha Goetz-Granquist, and Dave Samek Staff Present: Chip Vincent, City of Renton Department Community& Economic Development; John Collum, Department of Community and Economic Development; and Jessie Kotarski, City of Renton Department Community& Economic Development Guests Present: Evan Bennett, Executive Director, Evergreen City Ballet and Andrew Abrams, Metal Sculptor and Renton resident. Call to Order: Meeting was called to order by RMAC-Chair, Mitch Shepherd at 6:05 pm. * Evan Bennett gave an overview of the programs of the Evergreen City Ballet. The program offers classes in Tap,Jazz and Ballet as well as school performances. The tickets for their annual performance of the Nutcracker will cost$18-$38. Mitch commented that the RMAC has some pilot funding to enhance cultural diversity that Evergreen City Ballet might want to consider submitting an application for their program. The funds can be used for marketing, outreach,transportation and for tickets. *Civic Core Update: Wayfinding Signs-John Collum and Chip Vincent presented the three design concepts for the Wayfinding signs that are part of the Downtown Core Initiative. The first design (Concept 1)was traditional and included: Monument signs that light up at night; directional vehicle signs; and red brick pole toppers that reflect the buildings in downtown Renton. The second design (Concept 2) was more abstract and modern. It had an aluminum stenciled "R"for Renton and dark blue colors to connect to the water and rivers in Renton. There will be one last Public Workshop on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 from 6:00-7:30 at the Pavilion. Also, an Open House will be held earlier, from 4:30-6:00 to review design and development strategies for a proposed Arts Trail that will connect Burnett Linear Park to the Cedar River. Information regarding these initiatives can also be seen on-line at: Rentonciviccore.com Approval of Minutes: Minutes of the September 5, 2017 meeting were approved as submitted. MSC (Neil/Mary) Correspondence and Announcements: • RMAC Commissioner,Jerri Everett, submitted her letter of resignation after serving on the RMAC for 18 years. It is customary for the Mayor to issue a Proclamation for commissioners with such long tenure. Adrienne and Sue will plan a party or reception in her honor. Mitch will send an email to RMAC members to target a yearend date for the event. • Other- Correspondence and event folders were circulated for individual review. • 2018 Budget Process Update: The RMAC will get 1%from capital development projects in Renton. It is expected that$50,000 will be authorized for 2018.This proposed amount advances to the City Council next week. It was noted that the RMAC presentations have helped the Council to see the projects the RMAC has completed and sponsored. New Business: * 2017 Grant Requests—Adrienne, Neil and Kim are on the RMAC Grant Review Committee. Allied Arts has requested $5500 for a video project. Jessie will email the committee to coordinate a meeting. *Galvanizing Art Projects * Dragonfly Sculpture—Marsha has approval to proceed to check availability and size on-line for a sculpture similar to one from the Squawk Mountain Nursery. * New Year's Eve Concert— Neil and Dave will put on a family friendly concert at the Renton Civic Theatre that showcases local music. The$3,000 cost is part the Galvanizing Art budget. Old Business: * Pop-Up Event— Huge success, our display won second place. The RMAC shared space the King County Library and Urban Sprouts in front of the Cortona Building on Friday, 9/15—Sunday, 9/17/2017. The space had seating, bookshelves and books, as well as drawing materials. Mitch brought a drum set for drum impromptu sessions. RMAC members are answered questions about art in Renton and handed out survey cards to see what art and events residents wanted in Renton *Rencon Recap— Event was 72% successful with about 2500 attendees and volunteers in downtown Renton according to Ben. *Multi-Cultural Event—Was held on Friday, 9/22- Saturday, 9/23/2017 at the Carco Theatre and the Pavilion. It was well attended with many ethnic groups represented. *Public Art Symposium—At Greenline in Federal Way was held on 9/22/2017. * 3rd&Wells Dragon Update—The mock-up is in process and the contract status needs follow-up. Marsha to check. *Renton Civic Theatre Mural-The mural concept for the side wall of the theatre is a history of movies in Renton. Elizabeth and Jessie will work with Bill and check the process. Other: *Box wraps for Sunset Highlands Neighborhood—Port Authority has Block Grant funds for art projects. Five Utility box wraps were priced at$12,500. Meeting at 5:30, on 10/09/2017, at Highlands Library to discuss with community stakeholders and make case for projects. Mitch to attend. *RMAC Retreat—Strategies to advance RMAC policy and budget need to be developed to be presented to Renton City Council by February. Retreat date TBD.
