HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/01/2018 - Minutes RENTON MUNICIPAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES ' Tuesday, May 1, 2018 � ' Members Present: Neil Sheesley, Bill Huls,Adrienne La Faye, Kim Patterson, Dave Samek, Evelyn Reingold, and Samantha Goetz-Granquist Excused Absences: Marsha Rollinger, Mary Clymer, Susan Jessick Staff Present: Chip Vincent, Administrator, City of Renton, Community& Economic Development Elizabeth Higgins, RMAC Liaison Jessie Kotarski, RMAC Administrative Assistant Guests: Emilio Morales, President,Arts Unlimited of Renton Paul Trieu, Penta Commercial (Property Manager for Village Square) Eric Tran, Penta Commercial Jennifer Kulik, PhD; Silver Kite Community Arts, LLC Preeti Shridhar, Deputy Public Affairs Administrator, City of Renton Call to Order: Meeting was called to order by RMAC Chair, Neil Sheesley at 6:00 pm. Paul Trieu and Eric Tran manage the Village Square shopping plaza on Bronson Way. They are working with architects to improve the appearance of the plaza, and were encouraged by City Planner, Matt Herrera and Community Program Manager, Sandra Havlik, to include art in the design to discourage vandalism and improve safety in the plaza. The team would like the Arts Commission to provide recommendations for the art component of the design and are looking for ideas and possible funding for four panels on the roof line between the tenant signs. The Commission made the following recommendations: • Reach out to the architects to determine how to mount potential art and consider how to clean the art in the future (material, ease of replacement) • Consider adding a mural to the side of the building facing Bronson • Consider adding sculptural elements in the greenspace • Add lighting to brighten the plaza The Commission requested a drawing with dimension and will add the plaza to the project list Preeti has been contacted by King County regarding an opportunity to take advantage of leftover/surplus funds from the current round of Building for Culture grants. The funds are leftover from awards that were granted, but never spent. The funds are for capital projects and Renton has the opportunity to make a case for the funds. The total amount is not yet determined, but the range could be between $20,000 and $80,000. The Renton Civic Theatre 1 � �°� a �� e has been identified as a potential recipient of the funds for the purchase of new seats for the theatre. Elizabeth and Bill will connect with Preeti to apply for the funds. A motion was made to initiate the request with the County to use surplus grant funds to fund new seats and other capital improvements at the Renton Civic Theatre. MSC(Evelyn/Adrienne) Jennifer Kulik introduced her work with Silver Kite Community Arts in the hope of partnering with the Arts Commission on future projects in Renton. Silver Kite organizes and hosts intergenerational art projects including theatre performances, dance programs, story-telling workshops and afterschool programs. These projects aim to unite a range of age groups in the creation and experience of the arts. Silver Kite will be hosting an art [memory box] workshop at the Renton Senior Center on July 26 at 1:OOpm and a holiday card making workshop in November. Emilio Morales, President of Arts Unlimited, provided an update on Summerfest and provided an opportunity for the Arts Commission to get involved in the event by helping spread the word about artist exhibit and vendor space at the July 215Y event. Arts Unlimited is requesting support in the amount of$3,000 to help pay for performers and supplies for community art projects. The Commissioners asked that Emilio complete the event-specific GAP application and return it for consideration. Approval of Minutes: The April 2018 minutes were read and approved MSC(Evelyn/Sam) Correspondence and Announcements: • Chip Vincent expressed gratitude and appreciation for the Commissioners' presentation to the Committee of the Whole on April 9. • Kim Patterson provided an update on the Artist Guest Lecture Series that she proposed as a GAP project for 2018. The dates,venues, and artists for the three workshops have been confirmed: o September 1—(2) painting workshops at MLK Baptist Church in the Highlands o December 2—glass blowing workshop at Renton Glassworks o The Commission asked that Kim complete the event-specific GAP form and submit for the Commission to consider Budget: The Commission currently has$52,900 in the general fund to spend on 2018 projects. The project list has been updated with proposed activities that were discussed at the Annual Retreat in February. New Business: Galvanizin�Art Proiects: • Pacific Northwest Concert—Dave Samek presented an update on the concept for the Pacific NW tribute concert. The bands have all been contacted and are on board for July 28. The venue has not yet been selected. A proposal was made to tie the concert in with a celebration of the unveiling of the 3rd Street dragon. Dave was asked to complete and submit a GAP event-specific application to the Commission for funding consideration. (Funding for the Pacific NW Concert was approved through an email vote on May 20, 2018). 2 � �� a �7e • Downtown murals— o Boone Kirkman mural—A call went out to businesses in the downtown seeking available walls for a mural. Several responded with their interest and John Collum is working with Fay Moss to determine a suitable location. The call for artists has not yet gone out. o Chamber of Commerce—The Chamber would like the add a mural to the back of their building that faces the railroad tracks and would like to add art to the storage container used by Rain City Catering. They have asked the Commission for recommendations/assistance. • Poetry Festival—The Commission will recommend that the Poetry festival consider applying for LTAC funds. The Commission will reach out to Tacoma to determine the perceived benefit to the community of hosting the festival in the city. Committee Reports: No updates from the committees.
