HomeMy WebLinkAbout06/05/2018 - Minutes RENTON MUNICIPAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES ' Tuesday, June 5, 2018 � ' Members Present: Neil Sheesley, Evelyn Reingold, and Susan Jessick Excused Absences: Marsha Rollinger, Mary Clymer, Bill Huls, Samantha Goetz-Granquist, Adrienne La Faye, Kim Patterson Staff Present: Elizabeth Higgins, RMAC Liaison Jessie Kotarski, RMAC Administrative Assistant Guests: Doug Medbury, Dean, Culinary Arts Program, Renton Technical College Call to Order: Meeting was called to order by RMAC Chair, Neil Sheesley at 6:00 pm. Doug Medbury is requesting collaboration with the Arts Commission to continue the work that Arts Unlimited has done in the past to fill the dining hall at Renton Technical College with local art work.The dining hall is open to the public Monday through Friday and is frequently used for private events. The room is designed for easy installation and exhibit of rotating shows and featured flexible lighting and an art hanging system are already in place.The College would like the Arts Commission to help connect them with Renton-area artists who would like the opportunity to display their work for 3 to 4 months. The College would like to change out the art once per quarter (4 times a year).The space is secure and the College will help connect the artist with potential buyers. All proceeds from sales would go to the artist.The Commission has expressed an interest in working with RTC and the information will be sent out to locate artists interested in the project. Approval of Minutes: Without a quorum present, the May 2018 minutes remain unapproved. Correspondence and Announcements: • Jessie Kotarski presented the Small Fa�ade grant application to the Commission with the intent to spread the word about the opportunity for businesses and property owners in Downtown Renton to apply for matching funds to enhance their storefronts. The grant can be used for the addition of murals, signs, parklets, street cafes or other artistic features that add value and interest to the exterior, public-facing side of the building. The deadline to apply is June 30, 2018. • Neil Sheesley attended the first planning meeting for the Multicultural Festival scheduled for September 16 and 17. The event organizers have expressed an interest in getting the Arts Commission more involved in the event with a presence at the two-day event in Downtown Renton. Neil and Mary will continue to attend the planning meetings and report back to the Commission. 1 � �� a �7e Budget: The biennial budget is currently in the agreement phase of the process(and has not yet been finalized or approved). The current proposed budget for the Arts Commission includes an increase to reflect "$1 per head" (equivalent to approximately$103,000 with the current population of Renton) and the addition of a full-time support staff inember. If approved, the budget will go into effect January 1, 2019. The carry-over from the 2017 budget was approved and $16,379 was added to the 2018 totals to cover committed projects from 2017. New Business: Galvanizin�Art Prolects: • City Center Parking Garage Display Cabinets—Jessie Kotarski presented a proposal for the installation of 10 vinyl graphics in the parking garage display cabinets. Artists Yvonne Chan, was selected from the call for artists that was sent out for the Utility Box wrap project and is eager to work with the Arts Commission to create 10 unique designs that illustrate the diversity of arts in Renton. Funds were committed to the project in 2017 and $879 remains from those funds. The request is to increase funding to$2,500 for the project to cover the printing of the vinyl graphics and artist fees. • Utility Box wraps in Sunset—An artist has been selected for the 3 utility boxes in the Sunset area. Jean Bradbury responded to the Call for Artists and was chosen to work with the community to come up with 3 designs for the boxes. Jean will be working with kids in the Sunset area and plans to use the children's artwork to create images of the local flora and fauna to cover the boxes. • Pacific Northwest Concert—The artists have been selected and the date confirmed for July 28. Dave Samek was not present to provide an update. • Dragon Dedication event—The dragon is on schedule for completion by July 28 and there will be future discussion around organizing an unveiling event in combination with the Pacific NW Concert. • Boone Kirkman mural—A location has been selected for the mural of Boone "Boom Boom" Kirkman and a call for artists has been drafted. The Arts Commission has been asked to help spread the call to their networks. Committee Reports: No updates from the committees. The meeting was adjourned at 7:35 p.m. 2 � �°� a �� e
