CALL TO ORDER: The March l2, 2009, meeting of the Library Board at the Renton Public Library was calied to order at 7:40p.m by Acting President Peter Hartley. 2. APPR�VAL OF AGENDA: Amy Pieper MOVED THAT THE AGENDA F�R March 12, 2009,be approved. SECONDED by lohn DuBois. The motion CARRIED. 3. REVIEW OF MINUTES: Peter Hartley MOVED THAT THE MINUTES OF February 12, 2009, be approved. SECONDED hy Amy Pieper. The motion CARRIED. 4. PUBLIC COMMENT: Matt Smith explained that he is working on a Community Issues merit badge for the Eagle Scout Program, and he had chosen ta write a report on the potential annexation of Rentan into the King County Library System. He requested an apportunity to ask questions after the Baard's discussion of that topic later in the agenda. 5. COMMUNICATIONS: None. 6. FINANCIAL REPORT: The Expenditure Status Report far lanuary 2409 was distributed. The February repart is not yet available from Finance and will be distributed at the next meeting. 7. MONTHLY REPORT: STATISTICS—February 2009 statistics were distributed, with increases noted in all categaries. 8. OLD SUSINESS: 2009 BLTDGET—Bette Anderson gave an update on the City's projected revenue shortfall for 2009, and the steps being taken to narrow the gap between budgeted expenditures and anticipated revenue. MASTER PLAN—Bette Andersan reparted on a meeting with King County Library System (KCLS) on Wednesday,February 25, for the putpose of initiating discussions about annexation to the district. Topics discussed included maintenance of existing buildings, planning for new buildings, integration of staff and curcent Renton Library operations into KCLS, schedule for activities leading to an annexation vote, inForming the public before an election, and providing library service during the interim between a positive vote for annexation and the official effective 1 RENT�N PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING March 12, 2049 date of the annexation. The next steps wtll be to begin drafting an inter-local agreement clarifying the terms of the�wnnexation, to determine what comparabie positions would be a�a�iable for Renton Staff, and to decide on a target date for the public rrote on annexation_ 011TREACH LIBRARIAN—Kristine Baker has been selected to fill the new librarian position, which is funded by monuy rereived from KCLS due to tiie City's annexation of the Benson Hi11 area. Kr�s will begin w+�rk on March 16, 20Q{�. HIGHLANDS GATES GRANT PR�IECT-The new computers have been received ;�nd are �eing configured by tf�e IS Department. The$3900 oi funding for the second year of the grant is expected to be received late in the fa11. LOCKING DVD CASES —The new cases have been receirred and are being�sed at the Highlands Library. The cases reduce the amount of staff time spent handli Grg DVDs by we�I over 50%,and we huve now begun tt�e process of ch�nging out the collection at the main library. VOLUNTEER PROJECT: OVER-SIZED BOOKS—Boaks that are too�arge to Fit up-right on �ibrary shet�ing are currently stored flat on bottam shelves, making it difficult to �nd a speci�c title. Because the stacks a��e dif�cult to hand}e, those books are seldam checked out, We will be creating an "o�er-sized book"area w�ere all thase titles will fit on shel�es correctly so they are easier to�nd and use. Vo�unteers from the East Renton Community Church �tiave agreed to take on this p�oject, whici� inv�s�ves moving large numbers of books to create the necessary shelf space. 9, NEW BUSINESS: N��ne �0.
