Meeting Report
Renton City Hall
Council Conference Room, 7th Floor
July 18, 2017 3:00 p.m.

Hold off until next HSAC meeting, a few committee members did not read minutes prior to meeting.
4. Contracted Agencies Welcome
Introductions around the table: Renton Area Youth & Family Services, Highline Community College-Start
Zone, Nexus Youth and Families
• Highline Community College-Start Zone is an Entrepreneurial Training Service that helps low
income residents, including refugees and immigrants.They have helped 113 business, 86 are new
and 27 are expansions.To qualify you must be a resident in the South King County area,fall under
HUD Income Guidelines.This program has just started for Renton residents on July 15t of this year.
Classes will be offered in Spanish.
• Renton Area Youth and Family started as a drop in center in Renton in the year 1970. Currently
provides school based services in Renton and Tukwila, primarily working with students from birth-
18 with mental health and youth development. They are expanding the program to adults who are
connected to the children being served. Provides counseling services, behavioral health,
substance abuse services, and the Healthy Start program for first time parents that are younger
than age 24. They have received funding through a Best Start for Kids grant, and in collaboration
with Health Point operate Teen clinics at Renton High School and the Cynthia Green Center in
Skyway.
• Nexus Youth and Families was opened by teachers/board member as a shelter to protect youth
prostitutes during the Green River killings. Funding from Renton is for outreach to homeless
youth. They meet with youth on the streets to give out hygiene packs that are prepacked
male/female products that are all donated to Nexus. Examples of packs:toothbrush, deodorant,
socks, wipes, under garments, snacks. Also provide harm reduction kits as a way of establishing a
connection with the youth so they can eventually connect them to services. They do outreach in
Renton on Thursdays. They operate both a shelter in Auburn and a drop in day shelter.

6. Discussion/Action Items
a. VR-Vehicle Residency: Guy is looking for faith based organization to provide a parking lot for
people living in their vehicles. Would also need to provide some services like porta potties.
b. Exploring the possibility of locating the Cold Weather Shelter at Day Star Church

c. Sobering Center pilot program ends the end of September and then will do program evaluation.
Due to low utilization,the Center is now accepting walk-in's.
7. Information
• Next meeting: No meeting is scheduled for August;field trip to Farmer's Market? Next meeting will
be September 19,2017
• Interview panel for HSAC member, Leslie/Teresa/Krista/Amy
• Agencies in September: 2 agencies/20 minutes per agency
• REACH now accepts men into shelter, no walk-in's appointment needs to be made.
• October meeting discuss funding process and rating tool for February.
