� RENTON MUNICIPAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES
Tuesday, October 2, 2018

Call to Order: Meeting was called to order by RMAC Chair, Neil Sheesley at 6:05 pm.
Introduction of Guests:
Northwest Film Forum/DRU Films: Dru Holley presented a documentary proposal to produce The euffalo
Soldiers of the Pacific Northwest, a documentary project detailing the exciting story of the African-American
members of the United States Army who served their nation on America's frontier including Fort Vancouver,
then in the Washington Territory. Dru is requested support from the Commission in the amount of$5,000 to
help cover the cost of the film production.
Approval of Minutes: Without a quorum present, the approval of minutes was postponed. (The September
minutes were approved via an email vote on Monday, October 8).
Correspondence and Announcements:
• Recap:The Local Arts Agencies September meeting was held at the Renton History Museum on
Thursday, September 28, 2018. There were 25 individuals present representing a number of local
arts organizations, commissions and municipalities.
• 4Culture Listenin�Session:4Culture will be conducting a round table conversation in Renton to
discuss the health of art in the City. They have asked the Arts Commission for recommendations of
individuals and groups to include in the conversation and a possible venue to hold the discussion.
Mary has volunteered to be involved in working with 4Culture on this project.The timeframe is
currentlyTBD.
• Seattle Svmphonv in Renton: The Seattle Symphony has reached out to the Commission for help
organizing a free symphony performance in Renton next year. They have asked for support securing
and funding a venue, getting the word out about the program and making connections with local
music groups who may be potential partners for a side-by-side performance. The symphony will
meet with the IKEA Performing Arts Center in November. It was recommended that the symphony
be connected with A Key for Change as a potential partner.
Budget:
• The Mayor presented the balanced budget to City County on Monday and in his address included the
additional $50,000 for arts and culture projects in support of the Renton Municipal Arts Commission.

General Business: Mary Clymer announced her new role as the Chair of the Reflections program in the Renton
School District Arts program.
Galvanizin�Art Proiects:
New Business: No new projects were announced.
Old Business:
• Art in Sunset Park—Mary, Marsha and Neil met with Community Services (Leslie Betlach and Alan Wyatt)
to follow up on the conversation around art in Sunset Park. It was decided that the turtle did not have a
place in the new community park, but the Department offered instead a home for the turtle in Kennydale
Beach Park. It was further clarified that the Arts Commission would support the use of the 1%funds
aggregated as a result of the Park project to be used for the purpose of adding art to the park, but the
use of additional funds from the 1%for Art balance would not be supported. The Arts Commission is
willing to work with Community Services in selecting art for the park using the available funds.
Chip mentioned that funds from the recent density transfer credit resulting from the Sunset Terrace
project can be used to fund art in Sunset Park.
• Multicultural Festival Update—The Arts Commission,through Mary's involvement with decorations and
Bill's loan of props for the photo booth, was limited but evident at the event on September 15.
• Citv Center Parkin�Gara�e Displav Cabinets (update)—The vinyl wraps on the back of the Parking garage
were successfully installed on September 25.
• Utilitv Box wraps in Sunset (update)—Jean Bradbury has submitted the final 3 designs for the art to be
installed on the utility boxes in Sunset. The install date has not yet been decided, but will be scheduled
before the end of the year.
• Utility Box wraps in Downtown—CED has proposed that the funds currently earmarked for the utility box
wrap in Downtown Renton on the corner of S 2nd and Main Ave S be used to work with the artist,Yvonne
Chan, to create a design that will be consistent with the poster garage art installed down the street on S.
2"a St.
• Olde Fashioned Halloween Party—The Arts Commission has been asked to help in the creation of
window displays for the Olde Fashioned Halloween Party on October 27. The Commission has also asked
to participate in the scarecrow competition as judges and artists in the creation of scarecrows for the
competition. Neil and Evelyn have volunteered to serve as judges for the competition and Mary
volunteers to assist with the creation of window displays for the downtown storefronts.
• South Renton Nei�hborhood—The call for artists for fire hydrant art has been extended through October.
The Arts Commission has been asked to help spread the word to generate submissions.
• Run Wild in Renton Mural—The Renton Downtown Partnership is hosting a night market on Saturday,
October 13 between 4 and 10pm. Additionally, on the morning of the 13t", the Owl Project is hosting a
community mural project to celebrate the annual salmon journey along Cedar River through the heart of
the City each year.
• Boone Kirkman mural (update)—The final concept was presented to the Commission for review. The
Commissioners were pleased with the design as presented and the intended changes as presented.
• Dra�on Update— No update at this time.
Committee Reports:
• Vacancies—The Committee to fill vacant commission positions will follow up with interviews with the
two prospective commissioners present at the meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:35 p.m.
