HomeMy WebLinkAbout040918 Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Dayx., Denis Law Mayor Proclamation Whereas, multiple sclerosis (MS) is a degenerative and debilitating neurological disease of the central nervous system, affecting at least 2.3 million people worldwide; and Whereas, the disease generally strikes people in the prime of life, between ages 20 and 50, and causes unpredictable effects in which the progression, severity, and specific symptoms cannot be foreseen, and the cause and cure for this disease remain unknown; and Whereas, Washington State, with its 12,000 diagnosed cases, inexplicably outpaces the national average in MS prevalence; and Whereas, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society has been committed since 1946 to heightening knowledge about the disease, driving MS research, and relentlessly pursuing prevention, treatments, and a cure, and has invested more than $900 million in groundbreaking research; and Whereas, the vision and mission of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society are a world free of MS and helping people affected by MS to live their best lives; and Whereas, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society - Greater Northwest Chapter is headquartered in Seattle, and serves over 15,500 people living with MS in Alaska, Northern Idaho, Montana, and Washington; and Whereas, yesterday, April 8th, the Walk MS: Seattle 5K event took place and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars from several thousand participants; and Whereas, the City of Renton recognizes the importance of finding the cause and cure of MS and expresses its appreciation for the dedication the National Multiple Sclerosis Society — Greater Northwest Chapter has shown toward creating a world free of MS; Now, therefore, I, Denis Law, Mayor of the City of Renton, do hereby proclaim April 9, 2018, to be WuCtipfe ScCerosisAwareness Day in the City of Renton, and I encourage all citizens to join me in this special obse - --- In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of tity of ERenton to affixed this 9th day of April, 2018.
