ORDINANCE NO. 3 312
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON
AMENDING PORTIONS OF CHAPTER 22 OF TITLE IV (BUILD-
ING REGULATIONS) AND PORTIONS OF CHAPTER 3 OF
TITLE X (TRAFFIC) OF ORDINANCE NO. 1628 ENTITLED
"CODE OF GENERAL ORDINANCES OF THE CITY OF
RENTON", PROVIDING FOR THE CONSTRUCTION AND MAIN-
TENANCE OF.FIRE LANES AND PROHIBITING PARKING AND
STORAGE OF MATERIALS IN FIRE ZONES.
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON, DO
ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION I: Existing Section 2204 of Title IV (Building Regulations) of
Ordinance NO. 1628 entitled "Code of General Ordinances of the City of Renton" is
hereby amended by adding the following subsection 15, to read as follows:
Section 4-2204, 15. Fire Lanes.
A. Standards. As required by the Fire Codes and the Fire Department,
hard surface driving fire lanes shall be installed surrounding facilities which by their
size, location, design or contents warrant access which exceeds that normally provided
by the proximity of city streets. Lanes shall provide a minimum, unobstructed continuous
width and height of 12 feet. Lanes shall be identified by a 4-inch wide line and block
letters 2 feet high, painted in the lane, at 50 foot intervals stating "FIRE LANE -NO
PARKING", color to be bright red, or by the posting of signs stating, "FIRE LANE -
NO PARKING". Signs shall be posted on or immediately next to the curb line, or on
the buidling. Signs shall be 12" x 18" and shall have letters and background of
contrasting colors, readily readable from at least a 50-foot distance. Signs shall be
spaced not further than 50 feet apart nor shall they be more than 4 feet from the
ground. Fire lanes shall be either asphalt or reinforced concrete, 2 inches thick,
minimum, or when specifically authorized by the Fire Department, compacted crushed
rock may be used. Where fire lanes connect to city streets or parking lots, adequate
clearances and turning radii shall be provided.
B. Driveways and/or Parking Area. The Fire Department may require that
areas specified for use as driveways or private thoroughfares shall be designated as
fire lanes and be marked or identified as required by this Section.
C. Existing Buildings. When the Fire Chief, or his authorized designee,
determines that a hazard due to inaccessibility of fire apparatus exists around existing
buildings, he may require fire lanes to be constructed and maintained as provided by
this Section.
SECTION H: Existing subsection (R) of Section 10-303 of Title X (Traffic)
of Ordinance No. 1628 entitled "Code of General Ordinances of the City of Renton"
is hereby amended to read as follows:
Section 10-303 (R), as amended: Parking in Fire Zone Prohibited. Except
when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic, or in compliance with the direction
of a police officer or fire official or traffic control sign, signal or device, no person
shall stop, stand or park a vehicle, whether occupied or not, in a fire zone , except
momentarily to pick up or discharge a passenger or passengers or temporarily for the
purpose of and while actually engaged in loading or unloading property. Vehicles parked
in a fire zone are subject to immediate impoundment.
SECTIONIII ; Existing Section 10-303 of Title X (Traffic) is hereby amended
by adding the following subsection "S" to read as follows:
Section 10-303 (S), Storage of Material in a Fire Zone Prohibited.
No person shall store materials, wares or merchandize in a fire zone.
SECTION IV Existing Section 10-307 of Title X (Traffic) is hereby amended
to read as follows:
Section 10-307, as amended: PENALTIES. Any person violating any of the
provisions of subsections (R) and (S) of Section 10-303 shall be guilty of a misdemeanor
and upon conviction thereof shall be punished by a fine not to exceed $250.00. Any
person violating any of the other provisions of this Chapter shall be guilty of a
misdemeanor and upon conviction thereof shall be punished by a fine not to exceed
$100.00.

SECTION V All Ordinance or parts of Ordinances in conflict herewith are
hereby repealed.
