HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 4038CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON RESOLUTION NO. 4038 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON, GRANTING CERTAIN PRIVILEGES TO THE FIRST TELECOM COMPANY TO BUILD A FIBER TO THE HOME/PREMISES NETWORK IN RENTON. WHEREAS, the information superhighway is connected through high-speed internet networks that will allow Renton children, families, and businesses to expand their knowledge, opportunities, and productivities, and is an essential feature of quality of life in the 21st century; and WHEREAS, such systems are already present in many parts of the world and are known as the Fiber to the Home/Premises (FTTH/FTTP) network; and WHEREAS, the cost of deploying such a network in Renton is estimated to be between $25 to $40 million; and WHEREAS, Google Inc., has issued a Request for Information seeking communities to partner to build and test an ultra-high-speed network; and WHEREAS, Renton wishes to pursue partnership with Google and any telecom company who would build such a system in Renton and offer connection service at a competitive price; NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON, DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION I. The above recitals are found to be true and correct in all respects. SECTION II. The City shall aggressively pursue partnership opportunities to allow private companies to build ultra-high-speed internet infrastructure and offer competitively priced services in Renton. To do so, for a limited time, the City will offer any telecom company RESOLUTION NO. 4038 that would build the first Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) infrastructure in Renton an incentive package that will include: 1. Use of City owned poles and conduits as capacity permits; 2. No permit fee and expedited permit review and inspection; 3. A utility tax holiday for twenty-four (24) months for any new revenues generated through the FTTP network system. SECTION III. The City is pursuing the Google Fiber Community Request for Information and will offer the same package to Google for consideration. SECTION IV. This Resolution shall be effective upon its passage and approval, and shall expire two (2) years after its effective date.
