HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 3493CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON RESOLUTION NO. 3493 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR TO SIGN A LETTER ADDRESSED TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY (EPA) THAT URGES THEIR RECONSIDERATION OF THE TIMELINE ESTABLISHED TO BAN DIAZINON. WHEREAS, the City is a participant in the Local Hazardous Waste Management Plan for King County (Plan) whose mission is to protect public health and the environment from the adverse effects of improper handling and disposal of household waste and small quantity generator hazardous waste; and WHEREAS, it is a goal of the Plan to encourage cooperation and coordination among all levels of government, citizens, and businesses in managing hazardous wastes; and WHEREAS, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is looking at the organophosphate insecticides (such as diazinon and Dursban) to determine if they should be taken off the market; and WHEREAS, these products cause harm to humans, birds, fish, pets and other organisms; and WHEREAS, diazinon and Dursban are the two top-selling insecticides in King County; and WHEREAS, the EPA has announced that it is canceling the registration of Dursban, effective December 31, 2001 and canceling diazinon; and WHEREAS, diazinon will continue to be sold through the end of2004; and 1 RESOLUTION NO. 3493 WHEREAS, scientists found diazinon in every stream tested in King County in 1998, in levels high enough to harm fish and other aquatic life; and WHEREAS, scientists from the National Marine Fisheries Service found that diazinon interfered with behaviors crucial for salmon survival, and this could interfere with our ability to restore salmon under the Endangered Species Act; NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON. DO RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that urges their reconsideration of the timeline established to ban diazinon. SECTION I. The above recitals are found to be true and correct in all respects. SECTION II. The Mayor is authorized to sign a letter addressed to the PASSED BY THE CITY COUNCIL this 26th day of March ,2001.
