HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 2702 Amends Resolution No. 2698 CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON RESOLUTION NO. 2702 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON, DECLARING A MORATORIUM ON CONSTRUCTION OF CERTAIN OFF PREMISES SIGNS WHEREAS large signs have been shown to endanger the public safety by blocking the view of motorists or distracting the attention of motorists, and WHEREAS large signs tend to clutter the roadside, particularly in heavily travelled areas and block scenic vistas and other views, and WHEREAS there are alternative means of conveying the messages contained on large signs, and WHEREAS the topic of how to regulate large signs has been referred to the Administrative staff of the City of Renton but there are inadequate personnel to swiftly review this topic in depth and it will take at least six months to perform such review, and WHEREAS irreparable harm could be done by the erection of large off premises signs during this study period , and WHEREAS, the least restrictive means of accomplishing such irreparable harm is to control signs 100 square feet per face of the sign, or larger , NOW THEREFORE THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON, DO RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION I: The above recitals are found to be true and correct in all respects. ll RESOLUTION NO. 2702 SECTION II: There is hereby declared an emergency and there is imposed a moratorium on the construction of off premises signs of 100 square feet per face of the sign, or more, commonly known as billboards, for a period of 6 months from the date of this Resolution. The moratorium may be extended for a further oeriod of time by a later Resolution of this body. PASSED BY THE CITY COUNCIL this 18th day of January, 1988. Maxine E.
