HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 2445 CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON RESOLUTION NO 2445 A RESOLUTION supporting the protection of the Cedar River Watershed and opposing the issuance of oil and gas exploration leases in the Watershed. WHEREAS , the City of Seattle Water Department serves as the regional drinking water supplier for over one million people, including thirty cities , towns, and water districts ; and WHEREAS, Seattle' s Cedar River Watershed, which provides drinking water to over 600, 000 people, is protected at the source, permitting a low-cost water supply which does not require any filtration or other treatment beyond routine chlorination; and WHEREAS , no public access is allowed in the Cedar River Watershed; and WHEREAS, twenty percent of the total land in the Watershed is Federal land; and WHEREAS , this Federal land has long been recognized by the Federal government as an area requiring special land management policies, which are contained in an Agreement with the City of Seattle dated 1962 ; and WHEREAS , the Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management awarded oil and gas exploration leases on Federal land in the Cedar River Watershed on March 17 , 1982 ; and WHEREAS , oil and gas exploration are incompatible with watershed protection, especially where no filtration or treatment beyond chlorination is provided; and WHEREAS, the award of oil and gas exploration leases in the Cedar River Watershed seriously threatens the quality of low-cost drinking water provided to the people in Seattle and suburban communities; NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RENTON DO HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS : That the Renton City Council opposes the issuance of oil and gas exploration leases in the Cedar River Watershed, and requests that the Secretary of the Department of the Interior immediately and permanently revoke those leases already awarded and deny any pending leases in the Cedar River Watershed. t.r } BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the Renton City Council hereby supports the permanent protection of the Cedar River Watershed for the health and well- being of the citizens of King County.
