HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 1960! I . . CITY OF RENTON , WASHINGTON RESOLUTION NO . 1960 A RESOLUTION OPPOSING TUITION INCREASE FOR INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION . WHEREAS the City Council of the City of Renton, has become aware of tuition increases proposed to the Legislature, and WHEREAS students are presently experiencing serious financial difficulty, a tuition increase would decrease availability of higher education to many citizens of the State, and WHEREAS a tuition increase would adversely affect veterans in light of the present level of veterans benefit support, affording fewer veterans the opportunity of a higher education, and WHEREAS the real value of financial aid to those qualified zs steadily decreasing due to inflation while many low-middle income students existing on the periphery of"need qualification' may be forced out of higher education and into the labor market or onto public assistance , and WHEREAS the student loan program through the Washington State Higher Education Assistance Authority has been declared unconstitutional thereby depriving students of an important source of financial aid, and WHEREAS a tuition increase would have an adverse impact upon minority students , especially those delendant upon fixed sources of support through minority education funds , and WHEREAS the society and the state benefit from an educated and informed citizenry in the economic and public spheres ; NOW THEREFORE THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RENTON DO RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS : SECTION I : That the City Council of Renton, oppose any tuition increase in the present tuition schedule for public institutions of higher education in the State of Washington.
