' . � ' � r� � I� � � � � o�� ���� � CITY QF RENTON, WASHINGTON � ORDINANCE N0 . 2794 P r AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON AMENDING � SECTION 10-109 OF TITLE � (TRAFFIC) OF ORDINANCE N0 . 1628 ENTITLED "CODE OF GENERAL ORDINANCES OF THE CITY OF RENTON" RELATING TO FUNERAL OR OTHER k'ROCESSION, ESCQRT SERVICE AND MATTERS RELATING THERETO . THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RENTON DO ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS : SECTION I::. Subsections (A) , (B) and (C) of Section 10-109 � of Title X (TRAFFIC) af Ordinance No . 1628 entitled "Code of General I, Ordinances 4f the City of Renton" are hereby amended to read as follows : I (A) , (B) � (C) i Section 10-109/ , MISCELLANEOUS DRIVING RULES , as amended (A) . �'uneral or Other Procession. It shall be unlawful � for any pedestrian, equestrian, or the operator of any vehicle to pass ' thraugh, drive or drive between the vehicles comprising, or to� interrupt a.ny furieral•�' procession, or any procession authorized by the Chief of Police, or pa�age of the Military forces of the United States or of the National Guard of the State of Washington whenever anyone of the above � mentioned processions is accompanied by a Military , Naval or civil police or private escort service which directs traffic at appropriate intersections ; provided however , that there is no duty imposed upon the Police Department or other law enforcement agenc���of the City of Renton to provide such escort service. This provision shall not apply to operation of emergency vehicles as authorized by law, nor at street intersections where traffic is controlled by police officers . The , Chief of Police i.s hereby authorized and directed to establish guide I lines and instructions regulating the duties and functions of any � escort service to funeral processions which shall include but not be limited to the appropriate identification of such escort service, the route or routes to be followed by such funeral processions , the times thereof so as to avoid heavy traffic during hours of congestion , the speed limit permitted by such escort service including due allowance -1- . • --- _ + ,� �, • . ' , � � . �> .. , , . . + . . . �or temporary excess of established speed limits for the purpose of controlling street intersections and tol�ep such �rocession uninterrupted, and like matters . (B) Operators in a Procession. Each operator in a funeral ar other procession shall drive as near to the right hand edge of the � roadway as practical and shall follow the vehicle ahead as close as is reasonably safe and practical. All persons , except those participating in processions or parades , shall keep off the traveled roadway portion �i of the street temporarily closed for a parade or procession. II (C) Funeral Processions to be Ic�entified . A funeral composed of a procession of vehicles shall be identified as such by the display of illuminating headlights upon each vehicle in the procession and it shall be unlawful for any g�erson to operate a vehicle in or as part of any funeral prccession without having the vehicl� distinguished by illuminated headli.ghts ; alternately a funeral procession may be i�dentified by such other means as the Chief of Police may des�gnate from time to time , including the display of pennants or other insignia on each vehicle being part• of such procession. . Whenever a funeral procession proceeds on any public street without any escor�t service� or the direction of any police officer stationed at any intersection, the operator of the lead vehicle of such procession �,nteri.ng upon any street intersection where a stop is required by the traffic code shall bring his vehicle to a full stop and yield the right of way to vehicles on the intersected street , and thereafter the other vehi.cles composing the procession, if duly identified by illuminated headlights or other identifying insignia authorized by the Police Chief, may follow the lead vehicle through such intersection without stopping. _2_ i "', r` .. . - .. ; , ` . - . • . . ` � ' ' SECTION II: Any and all ordinances or part5,�of ordinances in conflict herewith are l�eby repealed. SECTION III : This Ordinance�. shall be effective upon its passage, a�proval and five days after its publication, unless otherwise provided for hereinabove .
