AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON, REGULATING THE CONSTRUCTION OF FAMILY FALLOUT SHELTERS BE IT ORDAINED BY THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RENTON AS FOLLOWS: SECTION I: Due to the specialized purpose and emergency nature for which family fallout shelters are designed any such shelter which complies with paragraphs 1, 2 and 3 of this Ordinance is hereby exempt from the provisions of the building code of the City of Renton, except as otherwise provided for herein. 1. Definition. A family fallout shelter is a structure designed and constructed in accordance with this Ordinance for emergency use only in case of enemy attack or other hostile action to afford minimum protection from nuclear radiation, commonly known as "fallout" resulting from any such nuclear incident which recently has been, or is, or is likely to be of catastrophic proportions. 2. A family shelter shall be of a design conforming to that recommended and approved by the Federal Department of Defense, Office of Civil Defense or the State Director of Civil Defense of the State of Washington. 3. A family fallout shelter shall in all matters relating to construction and stnotia];'=ality comply with not less than the equivalent of the provisions relating to design loads and general building re- quirements specified in the Uniform Building Code (1WE edition). 4.' Notwithstanding the foregoing, the provisions contained in Part I (Administrative) (Chapters 1, 2 and 3) of the City's Uniform Building Code relating to administration, permits, inspection Lind.=Feci'-les shall be applicable to family fallout shelters. SECTION II: This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage, approval and legal publication.
