HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/03/2015 RENTON MUNICIPAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES November 3, 2015 Renton City Hall, 7th Floor –Conference Center Members Present: Paul Hebron, Marsha Rollinger, Mary Clymer, Neil Sheesley, Kim Eshelman , Mitch Shepherd and Evelyn Reingold Excused Absence: Ben Andrews, Bill Huls , Jerri Everett, Adrienne La Faye and Jaris English Staff Present: Elizabeth Higgins, RMAC Staff Liaison Call to Order: Meeting was called to order by RMAC Co-Chair, Paul Hebron at 6:00 pm. Introduction of Guests: Liz Stewart and Sarah Samson - Renton History Museum Jen Gonthier, Marcia Arthur and Sandy Stevens – Renton Tech Barbara McMichael – South County Culture (SoCo)  Liz and Sarah will have a University of Washington Museology graduate student intern next spring and would like the RMAC to collaborate on a project during the internship. The goal is to create an art exhibit from the City’s collection. Liz also mentioned that 4Culture has funds for capital improvements with “Building for Culture” grants. The Renton History Museum, along with the Civic Theater and the Carco, applied for capital grants.  Barbara McMichael announced that there will be a South King County Arts Commission Summit on February 24, 2016 at the Tukwila Community Center. This event will be catered by Project Feast, a job training program for immigrant women. Admission is free, but space is limited. Contact: info@sococulture.org or 206-878- 6912.  Jen Gonthier and her colleagues from the Renton Technical College teach a Fine Arts program in the Basic Studies Department. They have 15-30 students who they would like to be involved with Renton’s art collection. The project outline needs to be submitted to their department by December 8, 2015. All ideas are welcome. Approval of Minutes: Minutes of the October 6, 2015 RMAC meeting were read and accepted. MSC (Neal/Mitch) New Business:  Nominations of 2016 Officers – Marsha Rollinger, Co-Chair, Mary Clymer, Co-Chair and Evelyn Reingold, Secretary. The slate was elected by unanimous vote. MSC (Paul/Neil)  Small Grant Application – Applications from TreeRoots Strong Publishings, LLC and The Art of Writing will be discussed at the December RMAC meeting.  Review of By-Laws – The RMAC By-laws will be discussed at the December RMAC meeting. Old Business:  Art Project Ideation and Art Project Initiative - Marsha selected the Wells Ave S./Post Office sidewalk strip as the project for this year to implement with some of the remaining funds available. It will be an “Art Garden” with low-maintenance, drought tolerant plants and three concrete figure planters sculpted by a Renton artist. The current strip has been maintained by Neil and his family and the Post Office has appreciated their service. Marsha will advise the Post Office of the Art Garden Project. The cost estimate for materials, landscaping, sculptures and installation is $2000.  Film Frenzy Final Report – There were 17 participants in the Film Frenzy. The Screening and Gala reception was held at the Carco Theater and was well attended.  RMAC Budget Update and Discussion – As of October 31, 2015, the remaining balance from the RMAC General Fund is $2,018.62. Outstanding payments for high resolution photos of the art collection and new RMAC logo plaques will reduce this amount. There is a $2000 balance in the Grants Fund.  Arts and Culture Master Plan – Elizabeth presented a revised draft of the RMAC Master Plan in the same format as the City Center Plan. RMAC members are to review it and provide comments and changes to her by November 20, 2015. The final plan will be discussed at our December meeting.  Correspondence and announcements: The correspondence and event folders were circulated for individual review. Jaris English submitted a letter of resignation as a member of the RMAC.
