Cube, Sr. Sandel Demastus, Chair Audrey Godwin Raymond Lamb Vern Nichols Erica Rehberg Lari White Absent: Charles Thomas Staff: Gloria Gamba Bonnie Rerecich CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 6:31 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:, Lari made a motion to approve the July 1 l, 2007 minutes as submitted. Second by Vern. Motion carried. �r.r COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS:, The four new commissioners were introduced and welcomed to the Advisory Commission on Diversity. They are Audrey Godwin, Erica Rehberg, Raymond Lam, and Serena Aquino. Bonnie reviewed the documents that were included in the mailing packets. The first was . a copy of the City of Renton Vision& Mission Statement as well as a copy of Renton NOW, a City-produced monthly newsletter delivered in utility bills, to keep Renton residents informed of current news and information. A list of publications available in different languages through The Washington Military Emergency Management Division, A Personal Emergency Preparedness evaluation from City of Renton Emergency Management Department, and a very clearly written, "A Survivor's Guide to Disaster" was distributed. OLD BUSINESS: Renton River Days was again a very successful festival. Charles represented the ACOD and assisted in the Community Services booth on Saturday. The Commission received a plaque from IKEA Renton River Days gratefully acknowledging their support of the festival. Gloria explained the Renton Reporter had recently inconectly published the meeting room announcement. The City Clerk's office was notified and it has now been published correctly. � F1:\Bonnie2007�2007 Advisory Commission on Diversity\AUG 07 Minutes FINALI [3R.doc , ', ,� � � Bonnie asked if anyone plans to attend the Renton School District's Diversity Workshop � on August 22, 2007, they should contact her soon. She will make the reservations. Vern reported on the display of flags on condominiums. He stated it was the mounting of flags to the buildings that is objectionable, not the type of flags, and that it is common for associations have it mentioned in their Covenant and Conditions Agreement. The Commissioners are encouraged to attend Renton Technical College's ESL display at the Renton History Museum, which will be on display through the end of August. NEW BUSINESS: Now that the membership of the Commission is full, it was suggested that another retreat be scheduled to review goals and update the work plan. Lari and Audrey volunteered to assist staff with the planning. Hiring a facilitator is an option if they should so decide. Commissioners were asked to check their calendars and notify staff whether October 27 or November 3 is the preferred date to make arrangements for a facility. Commissioners were asked to update their contact information. REVIEW OF ACTION ITEMS: Lari discussed possible guest speakers: Amina Ahmed from Refugee Women's Alliance; Oleg Pynda from the Ukrainian Community Center; Jennifer Malloy from the Resettlement Refugee Program; Marty Wine, Renton Assistant Administrative Officer, to discuss Renton annexations; Deborah Needham, Renton Emergency Preparedness Director; and Carlos Guangorena from Plaza Bank in ""� Kent. Lari made a motion to vote on the suggested �peakers, second by Vern. Motion carried. The Commissioners choices are: Carlos Guangorena, Marty Wine, Oleg Pynda, Amina Ahmed, and Deborah Needham. OTHER: Vern would like the meetings to be more formal and to more closely follow Roberts Rules of Order. Antonio suggested meeting guidelines be listed on the board at future meetings. Erica announced the Holiday Inn could provide meeting space free of charge for ESL classes depending on their catering schedule. Bonnie announced that the Commission received an invitation to attend the Chinese Information and Service Center's Grand Opening & Back to School Resource Fair on August 25 from 10:00 a.m. —2:00 p.m., at the Great Wall Shopping Center. The web site has been updated to include all new members.
