MISSION STATEMENT
Renton Public Library supports lifelong learning for the public by anticipating and responding to
community needs for infonnation, and by inspiring and encouraging the community's desire to read.

MINUTES
1. CALL TO ORDER: The May 8, 2008, meeting of the Library Board at the Renton Public
Library was called to order at 7:00 p.m.
2. APPROVAL OF AGENDA: John DuBois MOVED THAT THE AGENDA FOR May 8, 2008,
be approved. SECONDED by Amy Pieper. The motion CARRIED.
3. REVIEW OF MINUTES: Amy Pieper MOVED THAT THE MINiJTES OF April 10, 2008, be
approved. SECONDED by Lynne Shioyaina. The motion CARRIED.
4. PUBLIC COMMENT: None.
5. COMMLTNICATIONS: None.
6. FINANCIAL REPORT: The April 2008 Renton Public Library Expenditure Status Report was
distributed to Board Meinbers.
7. MONTHL�'REPORT: STATISTICS —The April 2008 Refuoi� Ptrblic Lib��u�y Statistics report
was distributed to the Board. Circulation of library materials increased by 11% over Apri12007.
The greatest increase is in audio/video materials.
8. OLD BUSINESS: CROSS USE—The King County Library System officials wish to recalculate
the City's payment for reciprocal use due to the Benson Hill annexation. A meeting has been
scheduled to develop a method far determining a fair amount without engaging consultants to
perform another costly study.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)—The ESL class meets two times per«eek.

TALK-TIME (ESL Practice Conversation)—The Wednesday evening Tall<Time attendance
continues to increase. The volunteer facilitators ha��e indicated that thev�vish to take the
suminer off and start up again in the fa1L Library staft�will be facilitating sessions in June, .Iul}�,
and August.
PAWS TO READ—Paivs to Reud is by appointment on Saturdays and is proving to be very
popular with young readers and their parents.
BOOK DISCUSSION—The Book Discussion group meets once per month and is enjoyed by 15-
20 people. The Library provides multiple copies of the chosen bool<. When several sets of books
have accumulated, the library plans to create 'kits' for other discussion groups to check out.
MASTER PLAN—Chief Administrative Officer Jay Co�•ington, Assistant CAO Marty Wine,
Community Services Administrator Terry Higashiyama, Library Director Bette Anderson and
Assistant Library Director Aaron Oesting meet tomorro��v with Mayor Denis Law to review the
Library's Master Plan. The two options being studied are to improve services offered by the
existing independent library with citizens maintaining local control, or become part of the King
County Library System.
9. NEW BUSINESS: VOLLINTEER RECOGNITION BANQUET—The annual Volunteer
Recognition Banquet was Wednesday, April 30 6:45-8pm at the Senior Activity Center. Board
Member Catherine Ploue-Sinith attended. She had a wonderful time at the well attended event
and said the entertainment was enjoyable.
PARK BOARD—The Park Board will be holding its May 13th regular meeting at the Library.
Bette Anderson will make a brief presentation about the library and will offer a tour of the
facility.
10. ADJOURNIVIENT: The meeting adjourned at 8:46 p.m. The next regular meeting of the Library
Board is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 12, 2008, at the Renton Public Library.
