DISCUSSION/ACTION ITEMS Municipal Arts Chair, Pat Pepper, and Member, Doug Kyes, were in attendance to share information regarding the Arts and Culture Master Plan. Pat noted with a declining economy, shrinking budgets for education and public safety, and high unemployment it is difficult for the arts to be a priority. The Commission created a Master Plan that is res ectful of the current conditions. Studies have shown p involvement in the arts hel s children increase test scores and romotes academic I p p achievement. Renton aspires to be a center for arts and culture. The planning process identified about 80 recommendations. Five priority goals were chosen and prioritized to be accomplished within five years. These goals include: ♦ Capture the Community's Imagination ♦ Build Awareness and Collaborations ♦ Incorporate the Arts in City and Business Policies and Projects ♦ Foster Vibrant Live Performing Arts Scene in Renton ♦ Create Art Spaces The Commission invites others to participate by joining the Implementation Committee, inviting speakers to address your organization, help with fundraising and notify them of whom else to contact. Doug Kyes addressed the Board regarding building an Art Center in Renton. Not just for fine arts but folk art, ceramics, spinners, weavers. And not just for children, a place for workshops. Doug had examples of brochures from other areas, including Coupeville on Whidbey Island. The one in Coupeville is supported as a 501C3. Since opening the Art Center in Coupeville they also have several nice restaurants, places to stay as well as shops and galleries and a winery. Addition of an Art Center will make Renton a destination and a city of arts. Doug left his research material with Terry Higashiyama for staff and board members to review. Terry said she would return the materials to Doug. The boat launch is too expensive. 10 miles per hour is too slow of a speed limit for transportation cycling. I think this response to the 23. tragic death of a pedestrian was poorly considered. We love our trails, parks and open spaces in Renton and use them alot, all year long with our kids. At the beginning of the summer it seemed like the homeless people along the Cedar River and around the skate park were getting out of hand. I still see beer cans stashed in the bushes or thrown in the 67. river, but it seems like maybe the city has actively addressed the situation?
