The City's population has increased, but revenues are actually down and less able to cover costs of basic services. City government priorities as we emerge from the recession are transportation, public safety and economic development; everything else is discretionary. But the discretionary things are important for the quality of life in our city. His personal art medium is photography and he started as a crime scene photographer and has shifted into landscape photography. He is committed to supporting the arts in Renton so that people can play and stay. He realizes that city budget cuts have enacted a heavy toll on the arts. The RMAC job is to help City Council members and the community understand the importance of arts and culture and when the quality of life is enriched, people play and stay. Mayor Law answered questions from the RMAC and ended by thanking them for all the time that was spent to serve on the RMAC. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: COMMISSIONER BRITT MCKENZIE PRESENTED THE MINUTES FOR AUGUST. THERE WERE NO COMMENTS OR CORRECTIONS. PETER HARTLEY MOVED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES AND IT WAS SECONDED BY DENISE ZUILLIG. MOTION CARRIED. CORRESPONDENCE AND ANNOUNCEMENTS: Jennifer Davis Hayes passed around the correspondence folder for individual review. • � . � Renton Municipal Arts Commission Minutes Page 2 of 3 September 4,2012 OLD BUSINESS: Committee Report action required: Galvanizin�Art Proiect—"Lighting Renton" PowerPoint presentation complete. Lighting is an artistic endeavor and it was suggested that neon lighting artists be contacted. It was also suggested that the project be added to Jaris' blog. The committee is ready to release an RFQ and to look for additional funding from sources like 4Culture. , COMMISSIONER NATALIE GRESS MOVED AND IT WAS SECONDED BY BEN ANDREWS TO ALLOCATE $5,000 FROM THE 1% FOR ART FUNDS FOR THIS PROJECT. AN AMENDMENT TO CONSIDER USE OF OTHER UNSPENT FUNDS, IF AVAILABLE,WAS MOVED BY PETER HARTLEY AND SECONDED BY BILL HULS. MOTION CARRIED. Resource Committee: The Guidelines for a 4Culture Sustaining Grant was presented by Peter Hartley. There are four questions that require precise and concise answers. Peter requested that any input should be e-mailed to him ASAP as the completed application is due on Wednesday,September 26, 2012. NEW BUSINESS: Art Mural and Sculpture—Jennifer stated that all outside murals need to be approved by the RMAC per city ordinance. Pictures of a framed 64"x64" of a landscape mural to be located at 3�d and Whitworth at the offices of Bob McCorkle &Associates were reviewed. IT WAS MOVED BY PETER HARTLEY AND SECONDED BY BILL HULS TO SUPPORT THIS PROJECT. MOTION WAS CARRIED. Commission Vacancv—Jon Schindehette had to resign with regrets from the RMAC. Artist/Teacher, Jack Kegley,and Marilyn Edlund, Landscape Architect, have expressed interest in filling the vacant position. RMAC members were asked to spread word of the vacancy. Buildine Awareness— Peter Hartley and Britt Mckinzie lead the Building Awareness discussion. The focus was on the tools (presentations, etc.), relationships and support. The following was discussed. Outreach Tools— Explore use of public access Channel 21,You Tube, FaceBook and Smart Phone Apps. , Review the current presentation. Tailor presentation for various audiences and presentation styles. Develo in Relationshi s— Goal to have each RMAC member reach out to one organization each quarter. Currently,there are over 70 neighborhood groups. Determine if it is possible to get on agendas to have a conversation about art. A list of Arts and Cultural organizations was presented and each Commissioner selected one to start building a relationship and to invite them to attend the Fall Equinox on September 20. Supportin�Current Arts&Culture Events/Activities— A list of events and activities was reviewed to determine if there are opportunities to build relationships and awareness. Adiournment: The September 4,2012 meeting was adjourned at 6:31 pm. The next meeting will be held on October 2, 2012 in the Renton City Hall Council Conference Room (7th Floor) at 4:30 pm.
