Vice-President Mary B. Brown called the me�ting to order at 10:00 A.M. Attendance was taken.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read, correction noted and minutes were approved.

and the place was jammed with seniors signing up for trips. Everything I heard was "oh the way
Debbie use to do it; we went here with Debbie; Debbie; Debbie; Debbie. It was really
complimentary to you Debbie. Also our King Shawn, there were a lot of marvelous remarks
regarding your kindness and patience. Tim said as long as �ve are giving accolades for Debbie
let's give her a welcome hand for this wonderful ring binder. Mary asked if there were further
remarks or questions under the President.
Ruby Griffin asked Debbie why we only have a maximum of 14 participants taking trips when
there is always a long�vaiting list of participants. Debbie explained, "14 is our maximum, if you
have 15 it requires a CDL(Commercial Drivers License) and I do not have one. Shawn gave a
little history. When we first raised funds for a van, approximately 15 years ago, it was our
� intent to have a van to take big trips with. We purchased a 21 passenger van which backfired
on us; the primary intent was to pick-up seniors, bring them to the center and take them back
home. Problem we encountered was very rarely did we have more than six or seven seniors at
a given time. It worked well for some trips; but having to get certified CDL drivers cost more to
' do that and difficult finding people certified. We still technically have our own bus but we don't.
What happened is the bus was never used. When we stopped the program our bus sat 29 out
of 30 days. It was decided to put our van into the van pool to be used. Shawn said we still
have an agreement with Parks; when Debbie needs the van she puts it in the schedule and �ve
can use them. Sandy Polley asked if it were possible to take two vans. Shawn explained the
problem with that it gets expensive sending two staff inembers and 1 don't have the staff. I'm
sending Debbie out two to three times a month on trips and makes it tough just doing that.
' Pat Baylor asked why not use the larger van. Debbie said she uses the green nine passenger •
van for trips during the summer months because she has limited access to the larger vans due
to RCC using them on a daily basis for day camps. Debbie gets maybe one day a week to use
the larger van. Pat Baylor's concern is the trip coming up there are 35 people on the waiting
list and I think it needs to be looked at somehow, especially when you have nine trips and then
only nine people can go on a trip. Shawn asked which trip had 35 on the wait list; Debbie

indicated it is the King Tut trip; Debbie was able to do a pre-purchase of tickets at a much
reduced rate to offer that trip less expen-sively. Pat Baylor asked about sharing with another
senior center. Debbie said you are looking at over $1,000.00 for a trip, going coach is '�
expensive; when we did a combined trip we split and each had 14 participants. Shawn said I
don't think we want to spend money on a new van costing over$50,000.00 but is up to the '
Advisory Board. Sandy Polley asked if it were possibie to hire school bus drivers during the
summer. Debbie said it does not make since for the city to buy a vehicle that requires a CDL
driver three months out of the year. Sandy said just because they have a CDL doesn't mean
they can't drive a smaller vehicle. Debbie said that is correct and a possibility; but quite
honestly getting back to cost recovery, we are now looking at the whole cost of that salary.

Milt Tiede asked, under the Forgotten Badge Fund is it marked for special usage? Elaine
Koehler said when there is enough in the fund it is to be used for a donut party. Milt
, suggested that we put a fine of.25 cents on anyone who leaves their binder at home and add it
into the Forgotten Badge Fund. Discussion followed. Milt moved a fee of.25 cents be applied
to those leaving their binders at home. It was second by Sandy Polley. Motion Carried. Sandy
Polley will find out the cost for a dozen donuts at Chucks Donuts.
RECRFATION Sl3PERVISQR--Shawn Daly
- A couple things mentioned in the minutes: 1) It was brought up that we needed to
replace the flag. If you notice out the window we have a new flag flying. Question asked what
happens to the old fiag. Peggy indicated a special ceremony and according to regulations.
Shawn indicated we usually go through two flags a year; just to let you know the pole lights are
on once again. Ruby Griffin asked why the half-mast. Shawn stated usually when a military
', person is killed we fly at half-mast. 2) The other issue was the parking lot needs restriping.
True. We will do it the two weeks we are closed in September. Looking at the whole thing;
stripping, red fire lane and yellow; and repair the broken curbs.
- Outside trellis—what has been decided is they are going#o actually cover it with a
fabric. Depending on whom you talk to some like it and others do not. Wood has been there
since buildin built in 1979; rotten wood is bein restored.

- At our last meeting you were interested in possibly sponsoring a seminar, "Keeping
Your Mind Sharp" here at the Center. Tentatively scheduled a date of November 15. At this
time in the process of getting i'naterial from Roger. According to his fee schedule his �harges
for a half day session is $1,500.00 and a full day is $3,000.00; if you decide tn sponsor. A first
option would be to have Gen Care heip sponsor as they did previously and we can co-sponsor.
Shawn is not sure if they are interested in sponsoring us so the very likeliness would be the
Advisory Board would pick-up the full cost. The whole seminar takes place at the Center and
not split where half was at the center and half at Gen Care. Mary B. Brown indicated that

Merrill Gardens would be interested in sponsoring programs. Shawn said Merrill Gardens has
helped us a ton; they have realiy done a lot for us; they Mystery Dinner; in the past provided
money for the computer room.
- Community Foundation Account at the end of May 31 - $609,553.57.
- Tim was unable to make it today; he had another project he is working on. He
wanted to make sure I thanked you, which I was going to do, for attending the Retreat. The
last Retreat was 1997. I think it went very well. Terry Higashiyama did a very good job over-
seeing it. I do need to thank Debbie, she did the binder all on her own, I gave her no input;
Kathy helped her put it together. Thank you for your support at the retreat; a lot of good came
out of it. Just to let you know Debbie, myself, Terry, Chris and Tim are meeting tomorrow to
recap everything that happened, tabulate everything that was talked about and get the infor-
mation back to you.
- Last week we had a Staff Retreat. It was really good. We have things we don't do
very well. One is marketing. We spent about 1-1/2 hours just about marketing. How we can
better market the center. Some of those ideas came out of your Retreat; a booth at Farmers
Market and River Days. But, we are going to need your help; we do not have the staff to send
someone for a half-a-day to attend those functions. That's where out of your Retreat some of
you stepped up and said that would be your responsibility. We will pursue those types of ideas.
The other thing that is going to happen, the "Wall Hanging," as you walk into the Senior Center
is going to be removed from that location; it will be cleaned, framed and put into the Dining
Room behind the Coffee Bar. This will free up the space and possibly put up a current events
board. The dilemma we have is that Debbie spends massive time putting the brochure to-
gether. We get frustrated and ask questions like they don't read the brochure. One idea is to
put a current board with the week's activity they would know what is going on. We do flyers
like they were a dime a dozen. We have flyers all over the buiiding. We looked at Trips and
Tours. What direction are we looking at; still pursuing the idea of Extended Travel ... that is in
Tim's hands.
- Sandy Polley asked Debbie why we can't download the brochure. Debbie said it is
' available online. Sandy said, "yes it is. I like to download and keep it on my computer, but
unable this last time." Debbie will check and see what the problem is. Sandy also asked about
an electronic reader board, people can see it and it is bright; if you need a volunteer I will help
with it. Shawn said this is one of the things they discussed at their retreat and a flat screen TV;
Redmond has a flat screen TV on the wall and constantiy updates. My concern is will seniors sit
and look at it? I don't know I have a tuff time with the brochure; if you go high-tech are peopie
oin to a attention? We will ursue the idea and look at the different boards out there; stiil

using the old Breadboard for special events.
DEBBi� LlTTLE— Recreation Coordinator
Det�bie went over all the classes, up-coming events, trips, hikes, comput�er classes, and
general interests for the next two weeks; because we are closed the last two weeks of Septem-
ber and typically classes start the last week in September. A new brochure will come out and
classes start right away. I tried to give an advanced indication of classes starting the first week
of October in the current brochure. Dorothy Cook asked if help is needed at the River Days

Picnic held at RCC and at the Outdoor Movie. Debbie said "yes" to both. At the next meeting,
July 16, will have an u�date and who will be abie to volunteer. I
Round Table Discussion: Miit said having attended the retreat i didn't have an awareness of
what committees or sub-committees do. I put some thoughts down, Shawn will pass them on
(board members received a copy). Added a new committee, "Programs & Marketing" we need
to be more involved and do something. Shawn personally thinks it's good and instead of just
jump right in, review this at the next meeting; I like the idea of eliminating Transportation and
adding the Programs and Marketing committee. Milt also spoke to Shawn about refurbishing
chairs in the two meeting rooms and game room upstairs. The seat upholstery is torn, cracked
and very unsightly. Shawn agrees with Milt that the chairs are unsightly, in disrepair and some
are okay but a high number are not. Shawn will look into, if by chance, the,City will buy chairs
for these three rooms. Michael Nolan came over last week, I showed him the chairs and the
chairs in the pooi room that need ne�ri fabric; Michael will attend the July 16 meeting and make
a presentation.
