HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/28/2019 - Minutes RENTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY BOARD OF TRUSTEES May28,2019 Attending: Doug Brownlow, Denise Dhakal, Antoin Johnson, Jessica Kelly, Lynne King, Betsy Prather, Elizabeth P. Stewart, and Colleen Lenahan. Absent: Antoin Johnson Guests: Lynn Bohart, Lil Dog Communications; Mike Lennox, prospective Board member Call to Order President Laura Clawson called the meeting to order at 5:30 PM. Board members introduced themselves around the table. Public Comments Information Museum Director Liz Stewart introduced guest speaker Lynn Bohart, retired Executive Director of the Renton Regional Community Foundation and now principal of Lil Dog Communications. Ms. Bohart discussed the following: • Brief discussion regarding the "case for support" drafted on behalf of the Renton Historical Society (see attached). • Broader discussion regarding the art and science of fundraising, including discussion of the four pieces of the fundraising process (identifying, cultivation, solicitation, recognition). • Discussed possible fundraising opportunities for the Renton Historical Society, such as the opportunity for a Donors' Club. o Plan to discuss such possible fundraising opportunities at future board meetings. Artifact of the Month Information No artifact this month. Board Communications Information Elizabeth Stewart shared correspondence from trustee Antoin Johnson expressing his regretful resignation from the board due to personal scheduling constraints. Doug Brownlow, who had been serving as Interim Secretary, agreed to serve as Permanent Secretary.Jessica Kelly suggested the Board could reach out to previously resigned board trustees to restart the connection and see if there is any interest in rejoining the board. Correspondence Information There was no correspondence. Consent Agenda (Vice President) Action Item A quorum was present. • MOTION:Jessica Kelly moved to approve the consent agenda as presented and Lynn King seconded. Motion passed, none opposed, none abstaining. Ongoing Business Action Items (1) October fundraiser: 2 • Elizabeth Stewart will update and distribute a procurement form. • Reminder to trustee members to update the tracking spreadsheet when reaching out to potential donors. • Colleen Lenahan offered to distribute an email template that can be used when contacting potential donors electronically. (2) Annual Meeting: • Staff handles most of the logistical arrangements for the Annual Meeting. • Trustee members need to bring raffle items. • Any officer changes will occur at the Annual Meeting. • George and Annie Lewis Custer Award for Heritage Stewardship will be awarded to the Boone Kirkman mural team—Fay Moss, Will Schlough, Jessie Kotarski, and John Collum—as determined at the May Board meeting. Discussion Action Items There were no Discussion or Action Items. Mission Moment Information Elizabeth Stewart reminded the board that as election season approaches, there are limitations on Board members' actions while serving as representatives of the Renton Historical Society, so as not to alienate supporters and not to endanger our 501(c)3 status.
