HomeMy WebLinkAbout06/04/2019 - Minutes 1 | P a g e RENTON MUNICIPAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES Tuesday, June 4, 2019 Members Present: Brianna Burroughs, Carlos Michel, Dave Samek, Duffy Delgado, Kaie Wise, Neil Sheesley, Susan Jessick, Marsha Rollinger Staff Present: Chip Vincent, CED Administrator Jessie Kotarski, RMAC Administrative Assistant Guests:  Sonja Mejlaender, City of Renton and Renton River Days Board  Kat Lieu, Commission Applicant  Tabitha Brown, Artist, South King County Baha’i Youth  Sahba Bahizad, South King County Baha’i Youth  Bill Jepson, Artist Call to Order: Meeting was called to order by RMAC Chair, Neil Sheesley at 6:00 pm. Introduction of guests: Sonja Mejlaender, presented on the history of River Days and the art-related activities that are celebrated during the three day event in July. She spoke about the support that River Days received in the past from the Arts Commission which included funding of the performing arts stage between 1996 and 2014. The River Days board plans to apply to the Arts Commission for funding through the Sustaining Grant program and is requesting support once again for the stage entertainment and performing artists. Their application will include a request for a two-year award for 2019 and 2020. Tabitha Brown and Sahba, presented on their proposal for a mural to celebrate unity and diversity in the community. Their project theme, “Polish the Mirror of your heart” is intended to have a positive influence on the residents of Renton and unite the youth through the hands-on creation of this peace-themed mural. Tabitha and Sahba represent the Baha’i Faith of South King County Youth group and wish to make a contribution to the community in celebration of the bicentennial of the birth of Bab, the founder of the Baha’i faith. They plan to apply for funding through the Art Commission’s Sustaining Program grant. Bill Jepson spoke about the recent settlement of his case with the City of Renton over the installation of art at the Renton City Airport. The Commission refused to comment on his request to partner with the Commission for the possible acquisition of the art until legal council could be provided by the City attorney’s office. Approval of Minutes: The minutes from the May 2019 meeting were read and approved. MSC (Kaie/Susan) Correspondence and Announcements:  Carco Theatre – The theatre was recently awarded $25,000 from the 4Culture Building for the Arts grant program for a new sign and electronic reader board on the exterior of the building. Committee Reports:  No new reports were presented by either the Vacancy Committee or the Grants Committee. 2 | P a g e On-going Projects, Events & Programs:  Inventory Update – Brianna has been reviewing the City’s art collection files and updating the excel sheets that currently list the collection’s information. A motion was made and passed to research software options for a program to more effectively store the City’s art collection catalogs. MSC (Marsha/Kaie)  Sunset Fence Project – The celebration of the completed fence project is scheduled for Sunday, June 9 starting at noon. Everyone is encouraged to attend.  Sunset Call for Art – the Selection Committee has made the decision to invite artist Kirk Seese to work with the Parks Department and stakeholders in the Sunset community to create to be included in the final plans for the Sunset Community Park.  Renton Wine Walk – The Arts Commission will host a performance stage in Tonkin Park for the June 8 wine walk and work with Shunpike to host the Storefront artists as part of the Art show in the Pavilion the night of the event. A motion was made and passed to support the Wine Walk performance in Tonkin in the amount of $400. MSC (Dave/Neil)  Vigor Mural update – A new design was submitted for the Commission’s review by the artist, Alexander. The property owner, Luka Hocevar, is requesting the inclusion of Colin Kaepernick in the mural design and is seeking permission from Kaepernick for the use of his likeness in the design. The Arts Commission is unable to approve the design as submitted with the use of Kaepernick’s image.  Tacoma Art Museum (TAM) Loan Request – TAM has conducted a condition analysis of the Elshin mural and found the piece to be in great condition and able to withstand the stress of movement during any possible loan periods that may result from their request to include the mural in the 2019-2020 exhibit in Tacoma. Representatives from TAM met with the Renton Housing Authority to address their interest in the loan of the art and assured both RHA and the City of Renton that the piece would be well taken care of during transportation, installation and re-installation of the piece following the conclusion of the exhibit. A motion was made and passed to allow the Tacoma Art Museum to pursue contracting with the City for the loan of the Elshin mural for their 2019-2020 exhibit. MSC (Kaie/Brianna). New Business:  Art in the Neighborhoods – The Benson Hill neighborhood has requested the presence of the Arts Commission at a community meeting to discuss the possibility to pursue more art projects in their community. A doodle poll will be sent out to interest Commissioners to be included in the conversation. The meeting was adjourned at 7:56 p.m.
