Providing safe individual spaces for people who are unhoused to shelter, especially during a pandemic where it is especially unsafe for people to be living in congregate settings or to live unhoused, is essential and it makes basic moral sense. In the long term, reducing barriers to housing will continue to protect some of the most vulnerable and marginalized individuals in our community, also allowing the continuation of secure, individual housing options helps to reduce costs to our public health care system and can help people get back on their feet in the long run. From both a humanitarian and public health standpoint, it is not only cruel but extremely irresponsible to let our unhoused neighbors die on the streets in conditions that are PREVENTABLE and liable to keep this pandemic worsening more and more in deaths and infections. Please don't support the inhumane proposed ordinance that will force people out of their current shelter at the Red Lion and create even more barriers for unhoused people in this time of collective crisis. We need to be supporting our homeless neighbors right now by providing the needed resources and health care rather than restrictive ordinances which will only make the problem worse.
