Subject:Interim Zoning Control for Homeless Services
To Whom It May Concern,
Freedom Project is overjoyed to have moved into our new location on Wells Avenue in the heart of
Renton. Immersing our organization in your beautiful city means so much to us, especially with all of the good
work you have done to support the needs of marginalized communities.
We recently became concerned after hearing about an upcoming vote on the city’s zoning laws, which
endangers community members currently sheltered at the Red Lion and creates other barriers to folks
experiencing homelessness and housing instability. We urge you not to pass this ordinance on the zoning of
homeless service use.
As the pandemic continues its surge in cases, it is integral to preserve opportunities to isolate and access
hygiene tools. Many members of our housing insecure community are medically compromised and for them,
these opportunities are the difference between life and death. Placing these people in a position to contract,
spread, and possibly succumb to this virus is placing us back on the path that these shelter de-intensification
efforts were created to protect us against. The added danger of having entered the winter season and exposure to
freezing temperatures and extreme weather conditions is unconscionable.
We hope that you will act in the interest of public safety and under the guidance of public health data in support
of the currently in place and successful shelter de-intensification efforts. Please do not pass this proposed
ordinance on homeless service use zoning and jeopardize the safety of our community and housing insecure
neighbors.
We thank you for your ongoing work to protect the residents of Renton and King County.
