Dear City Clerk Jason A. Seth,
I am writing to urge you not to pass the proposed ordinance on homeless service use zoning, which would have the
effect of kicking hundreds of people out of shelter in the midst of a pandemic. Our community can and must continue to
provide homeless residents with safe places to stay while controlling the spread of the coronavirus.
Our community faces two serious emergencies: homelessness and COVID-19. Throughout the pandemic, representatives
of the city of Renton have attempted to block this shelter and fo rce people who are staying in the Red Lion to leave. This
ordinance seems to be an attempt to make it harder if not impossible to offer shelter or housing for people experiencing
homelessness in the city of Renton.
The shelter at the Red Lion has been a big success in many ways, as UW research, Public Health data, and numerous
news stories have reported. It has prevented outbreaks, helped people stabilize, and improved people’s health. It has
saved people from getting the virus. It has saved lives. Forcing this shelter to close would create a public health risk our
community cannot afford.
