DISCUSSION/ACTION ITEMS Choice Neighborhoods Initiative Implementation Grant—Sunset Area �Transformation PIan—Mark Santos-ohnson There is a potential to-secure up to $30 million for Sunset Area Transformation Plan out of 155 million dollars of funds available. The profile of the Sunset area is 269 acres near the City Center with 2,784 residents and 559 businesses. There is good access to highways and transit, and it is close to major employment, shopping and entertainment. � Community needs in the Sunset Area include: over 25%of households live in poverty; 75% of the students at Highlands Elementary qualify for free or reduced lunch; while the violent crime rate is two times higher than the city as a whole. There is a significant elderly population here. This revitalization,has been a work in progress for 15 yeacs. In the lastthree years,the City, Renton Housing Authority and the Renton - School District have invested-39 million dollars in the Sunset area. The City has committed additional funds of$30 million for added improvements. � Recently completeld projects include the Meadow Crest Early Learning Center, the Inclusive Playground, Glennwood Townhomes and Kirkland Avenue Townhomes, � utility upgracles, and the Highlands to The Landing petlestrian connection. � The transformation plan will start with the redevelopment vision including a new three acre neighborhood park, surrounded by affordable mixed income housing units and the new Renton Highlands Library. Targeted needs the Plan will address�include new affordable and mixed-income housing, enhanced education programs, expanded - health and.human service, crime prevention strategies, and improved access to jobs. The CNI (Choice Neighborhood Initiative) application was submitted in February of this year_for$30 mil1ion. � Mark outlined the budget requests; breakdowns, and services proposed.. HUD announces the awards in September. � Golf Course—Kelly Beymer Kelly relayed that the City Council had approved the lease transfer for the.RiverRock. � She is looking forward to working with the new vendor and is pleased how the � transfer time was minimal. VI. ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT Terry reported the carry forwards have not been through council yet; she will have,a , report in April. Terry thanked Marlene for taking a lead and contacting the high schools for a recommendation for our Youth Board member recruitment. Terry requested an � additional volunteer in addition to AI to serve on a sub-committee to review the ordinance governing the Park Board. Troy volunteered. Sandy will set up a meeting. VII. INFORMATION � Leslie reported on meetings with the legislators over the last two weeks. She said there is extensive support of the Sunset Park. She was able to meet with 11 out of the 12 legislators. Terry announced the upcoming Celebration of Life for Susie Bressan on Sunday, March 15, at Maplewood Golf Course from 2:00 fo 4:00 p.m. The family has requested in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Renton History Museum or the "Gift of Play" scholarship fund.
