The City plans to commission the artwork from one or more artists working in the community. The opportunity is open to visual artists working in any medium, provided the design can be digitally reproduced as a vinyl wrap. Program Overview A monument sign provides an excellent format for city promotion while representing an image of the pride we have in our community. These permanent structures create a professional and inviting entrance to downtown Renton; and a celebration of the history and diversity of our city. The goal is to install four of these welcome signs at the major entrances to the downtown core (see page 5 for a map of the proposed install locations). The goals of the project are to: •Serve as an icon of the historic downtown core, specifically; •Convey the community’s image—a vibrant, diverse place to live, work and play. The City believes in supporting local artists, and in the power of placemaking as a tool for community and economic development. The project is open to members of the community and the City is seeking proposals from artists and creatives to: City of Renton Downtown Monument Signs – RFP June 23, 2021 •Provide a creative and dynamic proposed design that serves as a destination within Downtown Renton - drawing people to the district for photos, and representing a celebration of Renton and Renton history. •The proposed design will be adhered to one of the (4) monument signs as illustrated on pages 6 and 7. While a theme has not been identified for the monument signs, the goal is to select art that celebrates the rich culture and history of the region. The selected artist should consider involving local partners, such as the Renton History Museum, tapping knowledge of local historians and researching images and information about the city center, or involving local residents from different generations and perspectives. The end result should generate civic pride in the project and the downtown. The designs will be printed professionally on heavy-duty vinyl wrap and affixed to the installed signs for everyone to enjoy.
