The Applicant is proposing to install and operate equipment for microwave gasification 0 at the King County Department of Natural Resources Wastewater Treatment Plant. The 0 g project includes installation of a pre-engineered building approximately 20 feet x 24 feet x 10 yfeet in height. Equipment will include propane-powered pyrolysis unit, cyclone, microwave 40 gasification unit, and propane-ignited flare. The project is anticipated require 30 to 60 days for 0 construction and, following construction, be operated for approximately 500 hours over a 120 y day period. The purpose of the project is to reduce the amount of sludge that must be hauled 1 f offsite from the Wastewater Treatment Plant by using microwave heating to convert solids to €< ash and gas. The project has been declared categorically exempt under SEPA {WAC 197-11- 1 8-00(18)} by the Lead Agency, King County Wastewater Treatment Division. 0 t. The applicant shall terminate the use of the site for the demonstration project on, or prior to, the expiration date listed above. 2. The purpose of the project is to reduce the amount of sludge that must be hauled from the wastewater treatment plant. The proposed project is intended to demonstrate a 95 percent reduction in solids. The demonstration will be approximately-MO-hours over -days in duration. Propane is used in the process to power a pyrolysis unit and ignite a flare. The demonstration will make use of existing LPG tanks at the wastewater treatment plant. However, two new connections from the tanks will be added. The following paragraphs and the attached flow diagram describe the process in more detail: Pyrolysis Unit Sludge containing 60 percent solids is fed into the propane-powered pyrolysis unit. The pyrolysis unit heats the sludge to approximately 1,000 degrees Farenheit in a unique indirect heat exchanger to vaporize the volatile organic compounds and water. The solids that emerge from the pyrolysis unit have a relatively small particle size and are carried by the flowing vapor into the cyclone. Cyclone Solids (i.e., ash) and gas are separated in a cyclone particle seperator. Microwave Fluidized Bed The microwave gasifier reacts the vaporized high-molecular-weight organic compounds (collectively called"tars")with vaporized water to form low-molecular weight fuel gases and carbon dioxide. In a full-scale implementation,the fuel gas produced by the SAGE system can be used for onsite power production or other combustion needs. Based on the gas composition measured in prior tests the combustion exhaust gas is expected to be nearly as pure as exhaust gas from natural gas engines or boilers.
