HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/15/2018 - MinutesMINUTES City of Renton Senior Advisory Committee Meeting Monday, October 15, 2018 – 10:00 am Renton Senior Activity Center211 Burnett Ave N, Renton, WA 98057 ATTENDANCE: Beatrice Budziu, Marge Cochran-Reep, Vice President, Ruby Griffin, Shirley Haddock , Sandy Jensen, Sandra Polley , Patty Reese, Vicki Richards, Excused: Absent: Staff: Carrie Nass, Recreation and Neighborhoods Manager, Debbie Little, Recreation Supervisor, Sean Claggett, Recreation Coordinator, Jeannie Gabriel, Admin Secretary 1. Call to Order at 10:00 AM 2. Approval of Agenda Agenda approve by committee, Margie would like to keep staff reports on agenda 3. Approval of Minutes Senior Advisory Committee approves minutes 4. Discussion/Action Items a. Decide on how and where to allocate existing committee funds b. Discuss 40 year Anniversary coming up in 2019 5. Information a. Update on Coffee Bar - Michael Nolan Michael Nolan is out sick, MaryJane, Carrie and Sean will give update. Cabinets have been ordered, Michael will be at next meeting to give us an update. Construction will start 6-8 weeks from when cabinets were ordered, about a week after Thanksgiving. White cabinets and gray counter tops. Coffee bar will be closed for a few weeks, we are still working on where to have coffee bar while construction is happening. b. Gift of Play Scholarship Request – Teresa Nishi Requesting $1,500.00 for seniors ages 50 or more for classes here at the Senior Center. Classes’ seniors have registered in the past, computer, wood, art, garden, dance, piano and fitness. Any program that is offered for adults can be used for with Gift of Play Scholarship. 48 scholarships since 2004 ($500.00 per year) Seniors can apply for scholarship at the Senior Center, Renton Community Center or online at the City of Renton website. We will follow HUD income guidelines. Gift of Play is advertised in, The Buzz, both Golden Opportunities and What’s Happening, outreach, website, elementary schools, social media and word of mouth. Patty made a motion of $1,500.00 to Gift of Play with the stipulation with senior use here at the Senior Center at 100% and the remaining balance will go to Budks Funds, seconded by Vicki, all ayes concurred. c. Update on Renton Senior Citizens Advisory Board Ordinance Submitted today and will need to be approved by council, which will take about 2 weeks. Memo was created and sent to council to re-appoint all current members. November- December we can work on recruiting more members. 6. Report a. Sean Claggett: Senior Center Craft Bazaar will be on Saturday the 27th pizza and Caesar salad will be provided. Worked with Rite Aid to have staff on site here at the Senior Center City of Renton Human Services Advisory Committee October 15, 2018 Page 2 to give free flu shots for everyone on October 22nd. Spoke to a few coffee bar volunteers for their opinion on remodel. Carrie and I has met with Michael Nolan in regards to their opinions. Michael is out today. b. Carrie Nass: Council of the Whole, Kelly will be presenting our Community Services budget. Budget should be approved at mid to ending of November. All city wide athletics are ramping up and dance classes are currently going. Salmon Conservation and Restoration, various locations on Cedar River. Truck or Treat this Friday the 19th of October at the Renton Community Center. Patty Reese signed up to volunteer at this event. Will have big semi’s from Public Works, fire trucks, police vehicles and more! Debbie Little – first anticipated work day is November 5th. c. MaryJane Van Cleave: Will send link to Sean where Council of the Whole can be watched. Meeting will begin at 7PM and is open to the public. Channel 21 for local TV and on Youtube. As a part of the Senior Advisory Committee, please let us know if there is any event you would like to participate in. November or December, we would like to give you all a presentation on the new software we are implementing. We will want your input to see how many seniors will be using the software. Software will be used to register for trips, classes and building use. d. Treasurer: Money will change after the craft bazaar. We have allocated $500.00 from special accounts for pizza and salad. 7. Next Meeting Vicki Richards and Patty Reese will be out next meeting 8.
