The fallen tree is located in an area of the river which is heavily used by rafters and has resulted in several rescue calls to the Fire Department after rafters were knocked off their rafts and trapped under the tree. While the tree provides valuable habitat, its current location presents a safety hazard to swimmers and rafters using this portion of the river. The City of Renton Parks Department proposes to relocated the tree from the middle of the river to the river bank to prevent drowning fatalities. Improvements to fish habitat or passage pursuant to RCW 90.58.147. Hazardous Substance Remediation Actions pursuant to WAC 173-27-040 (3). Construction of the normal protective bulkhead common to single family residences. Emergency construction necessary to protect property from damage by the elements. Construction of a barn or similar agricultural structure on wetlands. Construction or modification of navigational aids such as channel markers and anchor buoys. The call went well. No one was hurt, and the two 13 year olds were assisted up the River Bank to a trail and walked out to the park, 300 yards away. The occupants of 2505 Maple Valley, the Larues, are the owners of the house at that address. Phone, 425-255-3131. They have two concerns. One is that the reason the kids got in trouble was the raft they were floating down the river became hung up in a fallen tree that is in the river at that point. They would like the city to remove the tree before someone is killed. They have a point. It is a place where many rafters could have trouble. I explained that the city does not have authority to remove trees from the river, that that lies with the state and federal governments. He wanted me to press the issue with the city before someone is killed. Second. The address, 2505 Maple Valley Hwy, is actually a little branch that comes off of Maple Valley Hwy. They stated that the fire and police departments miss the road a lot, and they would like the street they are on to be renamed. They said they talked to someone in the city many times, and were told that the road could be renamed, but the city did not feel that was needed. Now you know. Have fun with these issues.
